A while back [livejournal.com profile] darthanne told me about a virtual series someone was writing. Although it was based on the Starman tv show which I had watched as a teenager and liked, I had huge trepeidations about reading it. My experience with virtual series is that they're bad. The writers write in "scripts" that are nothing more than lazy prose, and Mary Sue seems even more dominant than in any other fanfic medium.

But, [livejournal.com profile] darthanne said this series was worth my time, and that was highest praise. So I went over and read the pilot episode of Starborn by Nancy Brauer and was instantly hooked.

It's high time I pass on the praise and insist that everyone go read her series. Nancy's scripts are actual scripts. She's made the effort to learn proper script format and use it. Don't let that scare you off; they're eminently readable. Although one of her characters had shades of Mary Sue in the first couple of episodes, she's since been turned around. The rest of the characters are very well-drawn, with an international/multi-racial cast and focus going to more than just the 20-somethings. Starborn feels like a real show. And, it just won third place in Scriptapalooza, so now it has official recognition.
