Lately, I've had this incredible urge to jump out of a plane, to go skydiving.

Since I was the kind of child who wouldn't go off the high dive at the swimming pool, nor go on the roller coasters, this urge can, in no way, be taken seriously.

Mostly, there's just this underlying sense that I'm not doing enough. I hate not working, and I hate not having the option to work for three months. Vacation is nice, but I'm too Type A to know how to handle one. Three months is too long to go without a paycheck or responsibilities.

DH and I spent a week in the Wisconsin Dells, our concession to high gas prices. Instead of driving someplace far away like New York or Las Vegas for the week, we went to midwest tourist trap extraordinare only two hours from our home. We had a fantastic time, and will definitely be returning next year. The Dells had everything we want in a vacation, plus a few quiet surprises.

Prior to the Dell's trip, I drove to Beloit to meet with a high school classmate whom I really haven't seen since high school. We met up at our 10th reunion, but didn't have a lot of time to talk. Over a long lunch, we got caught up and, I hope, laid the foundations for a friendship. As she wrote on her blog, in high school we were friendly, but not friends. I think we were both too busy pursuing the people who weren't worth our friendship to notice the ones who were.

Overall, this summer has been better than I could have imagined. Yet, as the stores fill up with folders, pens, and college-ruled lined notepaper, jumping out of a plane doesn't seem so tempting.

They don't pay you over the summer?

Nope. My contract is only for 9 months, which is pretty standard. There's nothing stopping me from getting a second job, however the reality is that I'm competing for the available pool of temporary jobs with my own students, and there are a lot more of them.
