Summer's in full swing. I'm probably in my third full week now, though it's hard to tell since grading and clean up took longer this year than they're supposed to.

As usual, now that classes are over, I'm now trying to figure out how I've had time to work full time. The house is steadily getting cleaner and more organized. More importantly, though, I've been able to resume work on some writing projects (sorry, no fanfic yet).

Last night was the big surprise. I went to a reading at one of my local writers' guilds to support a friend/colleague of mine. After he finished reading, they opened the mic. Assorted people pressured me into going up. I hadn't come prepared to read, but I did have a couple pieces in my bag (brought along just in case) because I'd printed them out to show them to someone else a few days before. I piece I ended up reading was On Time, which it turns out works as a standalone (ie, without the audience knowing its fanfic history) and which got the most applause of all the pieces read at open mic.

The real surprise of the event, though, was how enjoyable it was. Yes, my knees were shaking for the whole 40 seconds I was on stage, but on walking away, I just wanted to find something else to share. I haven't been this motivated to write in a long, long time.

Other summer activites: working through the immense booklist that always seems to accumulate during the year. If you want to know exactly what I'm reading and what I thought of it, all that info is availabe on my Facebook page. Also, I'll be teaching two sections of The History of English in the university's College For Kids program this summer (for a grand total of four days of work); I'm finishing a research project that was started in November; another friend/colleague and I have submitted a grant to get monies for Gifted and Talented education; and we're going to start work on another grant for Literacy education.

Then there's the garden. We got it in the ground. The rains came. And the garden is growing like mad. Also, the weeds. But it's been too wet and rainy to do any weeding.

Congratulations! Yes, that story works even if you don't know the fandom. I hadn't read it before.

Or you forgot it. The comment you posted under the original entry would suggest that you read the drabble at the time of posting. :)
