The heat finally broke today and DH is out of town for the week, so it was a productive day.

I don't mean to complain about the heat because I know it's all relative. At school in Florida, it always amused me to see people running around in 50 degree weather with their ski jackets and gloves on. Now the tables are turned. It's only been about 90 here, so I guess it's not that bad. But, still, I can't bring myself to do much besides drink iced tea and sweat. There's a reason I keep moving north.

Finally made that call to the bank. A mortgage application is on its way in the mail.

I've been watching a lot of TV. It's been quite nice. When DH is home, he exercises his manly prerogative to control the remote. This means we usually end up watching little besides JAG reruns and Star Trek (any incarnation). Last couple of days, I've gotten all caught up on archiving the final episodes of Buffy. I also got its synopsis guide finished. Watched the first 9 episodes of Do Over, a show that I found to by hysterically funny. Apparently I was the only one, since it was cancelled after only 11 episodes. Added two more synopses to my episode guide for that. Finished a rewatch of the Highlander episode "Finale" which I'd started some time ago. Also watched the last several episodes of Roswell. I'm missing one third season episode there, so I can't finish the ep guide until I can get a copy.

If it sounds like I've done nothing but watch TV, keep in mind that I don't know the meaning of doing one thing at a time. I've also gotten some packing done, worked on the CD inventory that's in progress, ran errands, and read some of a few books.

I stopped by the library today to finish Dark Matter by Phillip Kerr, having had to return it before reading the last forty pages. So I basked in their air conditioning and forced down the pages. I found the book to be quite dry, especially for a historical mystery novel. Really not my cup of tea, iced or otherwise.

Finished reading Dreamwalk by Paul Ruditis. It's a Roswell tie-in. I started it last night.

Roswell, as a show, had a lot of faults. One of them was a complete lack of consistency. The producers were vying so hard for their share of the audience that they just ended up driving everyone away. I stuck with it, tho at times I didn't want to. Some episodes were quite enjoyable. Most were rather blah. I can't think of any that were just outright terrible. The books, OTOH, are wonderful. The lack of consistency in the show gives the tie-in writers a plethora of loose plot threads to work with. Unlike most tie-in books where the characters aren't allowed to change, the Roswell writers have to make the characters change so they can tie up those loose ends.

Dreamwalk is the third of a batch of four that are set in the Roswell TV series (since the series itself is based on the books, instead of the other way around, the first ten or so books have very little to do with the show). The first of this batch, Shades, was a rather typical story. As an episode, it would fall in the 'blah' category. The second, Skeletons In the Closet, is easily one of the best fanfic stories I've ever read. Had it been published online, it would now be a classic in the fandom. Dreamwalk was almost as good, tho it did trip into a few fanfic clichés. I'm much looking forward to finding a copy of the fourth book, Quarantine. And I see on BN.com that there are two more books due out this summer that are set after the series ends.

I started Mason & Dixon by Thomas Pynchon, but had to quit after a few chapters because I find his writing style to be too cumbersome.

Also currently in progress are White Noise by Don DeLillo, The Old Curiousity Shop by Charles Dickens, Confessions by St. Augustine of Hippo, and Of Tangible Ghosts by LE Modesitt. Oh, and I reread Bellwether by Connie Willis, but I reread that one so much that it's practically a given for it to show up on the list.

More fanfic stories I'd like to read:

Do Over -- set anytime. Any well written Joel/Pat slash. Who am I kidding? I'll take any well written Do Over story. Crossovers always welcomed.

Dead Last -- picking up where the show left off. My insomnia story currently involves the Dead Last characters being haunted by the ghost of Richie Ryan. Don't ask me to write it down because that's just not possible. The insomnia stories are far too complicated. But I would like to read it if anyone wanted to do a less complicated version.
