The university decided to give us an October break this year. I scoffed. What good could one day off in October possibly be? Especially since we have also Thanksgiving.

This is me eating my words.

October break is wonderful. Yesterday I did nothing except read that fic that [livejournal.com profile] weirdweb recommended. I'm not even a Stargate fan, and I second the rec.

I seem to have missed The Feast again this year. That makes two years in a row. :( This year, tho, I missed it simply because I paid absolutely no attention to when it was going to happen. Next year I must go.

Jesse even called last weekend and wanted to know when it was so we could go. I took him for three years running, then we fell into very sporadic contact. I'm surprised he remembered, and more surprised that he called me to ask to go since I haven't heard from him since February.

All my students were informed on Wednesday about Nanowrimo. The Comp students were told that if they completed it, they'd get an A in my class. I think one student is going to try to take me up on it. We'll see how long that lasts. November isn't exactly conducive to having a lot .. or any .. time to write for college students.

The first Comp paper is graded (except for one that I can't seem to get the momentum to finish) and returned. The second Comp paper hits my To-Do stack on Monday. In the meantime, there're journals to grade. Lots and lots of journals. Also, Lit responses.

My Points sponsored a bookstore run last weekend that resulted in Angel S4, Deep Space Nine S3, and several new books that I have no time to read. Memolink bought us a new television set for the bedroom. Lots of free stuff and no chance to enjoy it.

Isn't the homework supposed to end when one enters the workforce?

My friends intelligently pointed out that your comp student could just stop doing all of the homework for your class and write instead. Or do a really awful story. Are you planning on reading it?

The student could. However, he'd have to complete the novel per the parameters of NaNoWriMo in order to get the A. By the time that happens, he'll be done with nearly all the work for my course.

She could easily do a really awful story. However, I feel the investment of time and effort it takes to actually sit at the computer and put 50K words on a screen is worth it on the long run, when the alternative is to sit at the computer and put 6K awful words down for essays she didn't want to write.

It was very amusing watching their brains tick this information over. So many students got the "oh, I could get out of something" light in their eyes, until they realized that doing a 50K novel is more work, not less. :) By comparison to NaNoWriMo, the workload for my class suddenly seems really, really light.

It did occur to me that students may try to use this for an easy A. I fully suspect that most, if not all of them, will get to Nov. 15 and realize that they simply don't have the time to push through a novel and pass every other course they're taking. OTOH, I've had about six students tell me so far that they're signed up, and all but one has come in after hours for additional work and advice on how to approach the project ... and they've gotten all excited about writing. They've become more interested in my class, not less. (Yeah, that surprises me too. I thought I might be weeding out some students who really didn't want to be there.)

Are you planning on reading it?

If they ask me to.
