Can your fishy beat ladyslvr ?

My brain is fried. I am having so much fun dealing with all these classes! (honestly) I love the challenge. But I'm also very stressed out and tired.

The Japanese students are here. Today is my first real class with them. We're going to learn the song "Yankee Doodle" because I'm at a total loss as far as what to do with them. This is why I terminated my Master's degree.

I had the brilliant idea to let my 123 sections each propose their own curriculum, which means I'm now planning 5 different classes a week. It's enjoyable because each class gave me very well thought out proposals, and each are doing something unique and interesting. But, what was I thinking!

Time to turn in your slacker badge. Really what were you thinking. Though it's good that the classes are holding up their end of the bargain. Actually, it sounds quite rewarding. Though I'd never tackle it.

I trust your classes for Japanese students have an ESL component? Or at least some sort of loose guidelines about what the classes are suppose to be covering. I'd just jump right in and adjust accordingly.

Guidelines?

What are these things called guidelines? This school does not believe in them. I am teaching "American Culture, Politics, and Society" and "Basic English Reading" (at the same time). Other than the titles of my classes, I have been given no instructions. There aren't even pre-existing syllabi for me to crib.

My Comp classes are just as sparse with guidelines. There *are* pre-existing syllabi for them, but every prof does his or her own thing. The content of the courses are entirely up to me with the provisio that students write at least 25-30 pages.

Wow, you could do alot with that. From putting up a map and discussing how the Blues and Jazz traveled from New Orleans up north to Chicago and New York during the Industrial age; Statehood and national identity; folk art; or watching Buffy as a quintesential example of American adolencent anxieties at play.

Did you have any direction on selecting literature material?

Nope.

My biggest problem is assessing their English skills. They're not very high, so right now I'm working from some 5th grade social studies books while I try to figure out a) what English level we're dealing with and b) what pre-existing info on America they have.

Ah, the evaluative phase. *nods sagely*

Have fun! Better you than me.
