Monday was the last class of my first semester. This is supposed to mean that the semester is over except for the grading, right? That's what I thought.

Much to my surprise, I have had meetings every day this week. Yesterday was the meeting with the person who did get the Nagasaki directorship. I will be working in the program this year, teaching two classes. One is a one credit Basic English Reading, the other is a two credit American Culture, Politics, and Society. Both of them sound like fun, but now I'm going to have to start paying attention to American politics.

Today I had lunch with the woman who is in charge of the English Education program. She's also the person who teaches the Young Adult Literature class. And she's retiring this year. Amongst other things I learned that English Education is a hot field right now. She said that half of the positions posted never get filled. If I were interested in going back and teaching high school and then getting my PhD in Curriculum and Instruction (C&I), I could get a job anywhere in the country. Alas, I'm not. Still, this doesn't bode well for her job being filled anytime soon since Platteville is a teaching school, not a research one, and those few souls qualified for her position tend to like the research schools. So, in the meantime, am I at all interested in teaching the Young Adult Lit class if necessary? Hmmm ... I wonder.

If you taught any lit course, that would be the one you'd be most suited for.
