Yup, that's what this is. There's nothing more to it. But I had to tell someone and DH won't be home for awhile yet.

Student evaluations came back.

Question #5: What is your overall impression of this course?

  • The teacher was helpful, fair, and fun.
  • Well organized professor and a good class.
  • It was a good course. Mrs. Perkins made it fun.
  • I enjoyed it. The instructor made it comfortable, fun, and understandable, with lots of good tips on writing.
  • One of the better courses I'm taking this fall, and I have become a better writer because of it.
  • I enjoyed it. I'm even going to major in English-Creative Writing.
  • I actually learned how to write better in this class, which I never did in high school.
  • She was a great teacher and I learned a lot. It was a great class to take my first semester of college. It's one of my best.

    and my personal favorite:

  • This course wasn't a normal course. The teacher cared.
  • Mood:: aglow

You go girl! When I taught that course at IUPUC I thought to myself, "Wendy would just rock teaching these numbskulls."

I would like to note, that I had people who had trouble constructing sentances, let alone complex ones.

Well organized professor Obviously they've never spoken to you over AIM. :)

Great job, Wendy. That's great news. :)

Yeah, I got lots of comments about being organized. Clearly they have no idea.

I explained to them today the master plan behind why they didn't receive a syllabus with a point-by-point layout of what we were going to do in the semester. In short, because the goal is to teach to them and not some other class, which means making major modifications to the semester based on what the class needs to know. Talk about retcon :) They didn't need to know that the lack of syllabus was because of sheer and total disorganization on my part.

Even taking into account your last point, I think this only shows that you really care about the students learning and not getting through material. I also think no syllabus is better than having the syllabus go out of date in a day and then having a new version every week, which is how my German class works ^_^; (It's still great, though!)

I've had a few classes where a new, revised syllabus is handed out every week or so. That always struck me as more disorganized than no syllabus just because it was so obvious.

I do care about the students learning. I've wanted to teach Frosh Comp for years because I'm fed up with the quality of writing on ff.net. Let's not worry about the vast majority of writers there being 13. :)

Still, it's difficult to be worried about getting through the material when I've had absolutely no guidelines given regarding what the material is. The department doesn't have a standard syllabus, or any other one for that matter, and my sole instruction regarding the class was being told on a Friday, "Pick out a textbook from this shelf. You can use any one that isn't already reserved. Class starts Tuesday."

I'm glad that that lack of instruction didn't get passed on to the students. Somehow they managed to learn something.

Congratulations, Wendy! I hope someone higher up gets to see these comments, too.

By which, I mean, of course, the teacher evaluation comments, not the livejournal comments!
